An highly detailed study of the ancient silk remains excavated before the Second World War by Sven Hedin in Lop-Nor, Chinese Turkistan (now Xinjiang) and by Gösta Montell in Edsen-Gol, Gansu Province, China. The material found, believed to date from approximately the Han Dynasty to the early Tang (7th century CE), consisted mainly of remains of garments recovered from ancient tombs. The author explores many aspects of the technologies and design concepts used in the manufacture of these garments, including loom construction, dyes, materials used and decorative elements.
