Author: TWAIN, MARK (PSEUDONYM OF SAMUEL L. CLEMENS) Title: Following the Equator: A Journey Around the World
Description: Hartford, CT: The American Publishing Company, 1897. 1st Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover. Illustrated by Eleven Artists. First edition, first issue, of Twain's travel narrative, in its original binding. Publisher's blue boards, gilt lettering and decoration on spine, color paste-down on cover, tissue-protected frontispiece photograph with Twain's facsimile signature, and 193 additional illustrations, many full-page. Having invested heavily in revolutionary but flawed typesetting machinery, by 1894 Twain was practically bankrupt. His solution was to undertake a tour of the British Empire, receiving an enthusiastic audience for his lectures in every port of call and providing material for this highly successful account. Following the Equator was produced as "a sumptuous volume with numerous (193) illustrations by the best artists of the period, the entire book to be printed on 'plate' paper for the proper display of the illustrations" (Johnson, p. 68). It also includes the first photographs to be published in a Twain book. This copy includes the preferred single Hartford imprint and the signature mark "11" at p. 161. [BAL 3451; Johnson, p. 65.]. Head and heel of spine, corners, and edges lightly worn, gilt on spine mildly faded, former owner's signature dated 1898 on first preliminary page, tape repairs to front hinge, pages becomming mildly brittle, otherwise unmarked; else very good. GOOD. Photographs and Drawings. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. (1-frontispiece), 712 pp. Good with no dust jacket .
