Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote this verse play about the famous English outlaw, The Foresters: Robin Hood and Maid Marian, at the request of the American theatre manager Augustin Daly in 1892, when he was 82 years old. It was the last work of his life. Daly, who had met Sir Arthur Sullivan in California, asked him to write the music, and Sullivan composed the nine short numbers which comprise the score. The play was first produced with success in New York in 1892. The success of the first production led to productions in seven other American cities. A production opened in London in 1893. Although the play was not well received in England, Sullivan's incidental music was praised..
