Includes extensive Source Notes and a detailed Index. This is the second volume in William Manchester's three-volume biography of Winston Churchill. In this volume, Alone, Manchester challenges the assumption that his leadership of England during World War II was Churchill's finest hour. During the years 1932-1940, Churchill was tested as few others have been. He was pursued by creditors, and remained solvent only by writing an extraordinary number of books and articles. He was disowned by his own party, dismissed by the BBC, Fleet Street and the social and political establishments as a warmonger, and twice nearly lost his seat in Parliament. He stood, almost alone, against Nazi aggression and the disastrous British and French policy of appeasement. Despite these personal and political troubles, Churchill manages to assemble a vast, underground intelligence network, which provided him with better information on German rearmament than the government was able to gather. Manchester also posits a quite different view of the motives of the British and French governments in implementing their appeasement policy. His research indicates that the governments lied to their people as to the state of German rearmament in order to allow a strong German army to stand as a defense for Europe against a growing Russian threat. The volume is in perfect, pristine condition, unmarked, unread, tight, square and clean. The unclipped ($24.95) dust jacket (now in Mylar) is worn, with a large tear at the heel of the spine, small closed tears at the head of the spine, and wear at the edges. AS NEW/FAIR.. B&W Photographs. Small 4to 9" - 11" tall. xxvi, 756, (2) pp. As New in Fair dust jacket .
