At age 13 in Barcelona (1894) Picasso began his sketchbooks, which, by 1964, totaled 175 books. Through the sketchbooks, the young painter blossomed and matured into the greatest artist of the 20th century. The sketches reveal for the first time (until now they had been privately held by the family) how the masterpieces of this great artist took shape. In a precise progression of images one can trace the development of such works as the Family of Saltimbanques, Les Demosielles d'Arignon, and The Rape of the Sabines. The first section of the volume presents six essays by famous art historians: (1) E. A. Carmean: Saltimbanques: Sketchbook No. 35, 1905; (2) Robert Rosenblum: Demoiselles: Sketchbook No. 42, 1907; (3) Theodore Reff: Picasso at the Crossroads: Sketchbook No. 59, 1916; (4) Rosalind E. Krauss: Life with Picasso: Sketchbook No. 92, 1926; (5) Sam Hunter: Picasso at War: Royan, 1940: Sketchbook No. 110, 1940; (6) Gert Schiff: Sabines: Sketchbook No. 163, 1962. This section includes hundreds of images taken from the sketchbooks referred to, which are reproduced in full. Section II consists of a Reminiscence by Francoise Gilot, Claude's mother, with selections from various sketchbooks, and includes images from thirty of the sketchbooks. Section III is a Catalogue Raisonné by Matthew Marks which fully describes all 175 extant sketchbooks and features one image from each.
