Bound in half brown morocco over marbled boards, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt title in one compartment, gilt tooling in remainder, gilt borders on covers, all edges marbled. Generously illustrated with 26 steel engravings and 9 wood engravings, all by "Phiz" (Halbot Knight Browne), as well as an engraved portrait of the author on the frontispiece with his facsimile signature. First published in 12 monthly parts in 1842-43, this is the first edition in book form, containing the complete Jack Hinton novel. Other novels were subequently published in the "Our Mess" series, named after other members of the fictional military "Mess" devised by Lever. The author, Charles James Lever (1806–1872) was an Irish novelist and raconteur, whose novels, according to Anthony Trollope, were just like his conversation. Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882) was an English illustrator, etcher, and painter best known as the illustrator of the novels of Charles Dickens, Charles Lever, and Harrison Ainsworth, under the pen-name of Phiz.. Former owner's signature on half-title, old bibliographic note ("First Edition") in pencil on fep, edges and covers moderately rubbed and worn, interior hinges starting, all illustrations moderately foxed, else fine; otherwise unmarked, tight, square, and clean.
