Description: NY and London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1893. Limited Edition. First Printing. Leather. Limited, Large-Paper Edition (No. 46 of only 100 copies). Brown half leather over printed gilt and brown floral boards, gilt lettering and intricate decoration on spines, gilt borders on covers, t.e.g, fore and bottom-edges deckle, gilt and brown printed endpapers. Illustrated with ten tissue-protected, tipped-in, engraved portraits. The author, Julia Kavanagh (1824-1877) was an Irish novelist and woman's history author. She moved to France in the 1840s and adopted the country as her home. The book contains biographical sketches and portraits of notable French women, including Madame de Pompadour, Duchesse du Maine, Madame de Tencin, Madame du Chatelet, Madame du Barry, Charlotte Corday, Marie-Antoinette, Madame de Stael, Madame Roland, and Madame Tallien. Originally published in 1850, this was Kavanaugh's most notable work.. Old bibliographic pencilled note on reverse of ffep ("Large Paper Edition, limited to 100 copies"), otherwise unmarked, front hinge slightly separated between frontispiece and title page in volume one only, but strong, tight, square, and clean.
