WELLES, SUMNER - We Need Not Fail

Title: We Need Not Fail
Description: Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1948. 1st Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full beige cloth, red lettering on spine and cover. Benjamin Sumner Welles (1892 – 1961) was an American government official and diplomat in the Foreign Service. He was a major foreign policy adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and served as Under Secretary of State from 1936 to 1943, during FDR's presidency. "In 1948, Welles authored We Need Not Fail, a short book that first presented a history and evaluated the competing claims to Palestine. He argued that American policy should insist on the fulfillment of the 1947 promise of the United Nations General Assembly to establish two independent states within an economic union and policed by a United Nations force. He criticized American officials whose obsession with Russia required submission to Arab and oil interests. Enforcing the decision of the UN was his overarching concern because it was an opportunity to establish the organization's role on the international stage that no other interest could trump." - The New York Times. Old price stamp on ffep, otherwise unmarked, tight, square, and clean. The unclipped dust jacket is sunned at the spine and mildly chipped along the top edge, else fine. NEAR FINE/VERY GOOD. 12mo 7" - 7½" tall. xiv, (ii), 143 pp. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket .
