Illustrated with engraved portrait frontispiece and title page. Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish poet and author. He was best known for his picaresque novels, such as The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748) and The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751), and The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771), which influenced later novelists such as Charles Dickens. This history was written by Dr. Smollett as a continuation of David Hume's "The History of England from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688." The works are often bound together as a "complete" History of England. This volume was once part of a set of books on England, of which it was Volume III, but contains a complete, one-volume edition of Smollett's history. Spine and covers worn, significant foxing throughout, else fine, unmarked, tight, and square. GOOD.. Engraved Title Page and Portraits. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. 967 pp. Good with No dust jacket as issued .
