Title: The Rainbow
Description: NY: B. W. Huebsch, 1916. First American Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full brown cloth, black lettering on spine and cover. The Rainbow is a 1915 novel by British author D. H. Lawrence. It follows three generations of the Brangwen family living in Nottinghamshire, particularly focusing on the individual's struggle to growth and fulfilment within the confining strictures of English social life. Lawrence's frank treatment of sexual desire and the part it plays within relationships caused The Rainbow to be prosecuted in an obscenity trial at Bow Street Magistrates’ Court on November 13, 1915, as a result of which 1,011 copies were seized and burnt. After this ban it was unavailable in Britain for 11 years, although editions were available in the United States, of which this is the first. The publisher, Benjamin Huebsch had his own publishing house, B.W Huebsch, and was a daring publisher. He was the first publisher in the United States of James Joyce and D. H. Lawrence. The volume is in excellent condition, unmarked, tight, square, and clean, with only the slightest age-toning. NEAR FINE. 12mo 7" - 7˝" tall. 467 pp. Near Fine with no dust jacket .
