Henry-Russell Hitchcock (1903-1987) was a leading American architectural historian of his generation. A long-time professor at Smith College and New York University, he is best known for writings that helped to define Modern architecture. Over the course of Hitchock's career, he produced more than a dozen books on architecture. His "Architecture: Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries" (1958) is an exhaustive study of more than 150 years of architecture that was widely used as a textbook in architectural history courses from the 1960s to the 1980s, and is still a useful reference today. The scope of this volume is international; it covers not only the countries of Europe but also North and South America and Australia, and considers the work of the most influential architects and movements. [It is] an attempt to bring out in each of the successive aspects of architectural production since 1800 its own intrinsic merits. In particular the chapters on commercial architecture and on the nineteenth-century Anglo-American house represent the first serious attempts to tell these notable stories consecutively. This is a large and heavy volume - additional shipping may apply. Former owner's name on fep, otherwise unmarked, tight, and square. The dust jacket, now in Mylar, is in tatters. VERY GOOD+/FAIR.
