Beautifully bound in full brown leather prize binding, spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering on one burgundy and one black label on each volume, the remaining compartments decorated with intricate gilt tooling, gilt and blind-stamped borders on covers, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Henry Hallam (1777-1859) was an English historian. Hallam was a fellow of the Royal Society, and a trustee of the British Museum. In 1830 he received the royal gold medal for history.. Prize label on fep of Volume One only (Presented by the Wolverhampton Law Association to Alfred Whitehouse in January of 1878). Signature of Alfred Whitehouse dated January, 1878 on first preliminary page of Volume One only, otherwise unmarked. The volumes are in excellent condition, tight, square and clean, with strong hinges and seemingly unread. An extremely handsome set.
