Title: Home Front Memo
Description: New York, Harcourt, Brace and Company, (1943). First Edition. Hardcover. A collection of “pamphlets, speeches, broadcasts, newspaper columns, poems, legends, photograph texts.” Illustrated with photographs. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "Dear Jo Wershba/a few spots here are/strictly in your field/of Christian endeavor/Carl." Joseph Wershba was a CBS journalist who worked alongside Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite. One of the original producers of the television show 60 MINUTES, Wershba may be best remembered today through Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of him in the 2005 film about Edward Murrow: GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. He also wrote the foreword to Harry Golden's popular book CARL SANDBURG. Tucked into the book is a group of 5 handwritten notes, presumably by Wershba, referring to a CBS show featuring Sandburg and his work, as well as a printout of a microfilm newspaper clipping of an article by Sandburg on Babe Ruth published in 1928. Minor bumps to corners. Near Fine in a Good, mostly complete dustwrapper with edgewear From the front flap of the dustwrapper: “A troubled American citizen who loves his country -- and hopes that he loves the Family of Man around the whole earth -- records in this book the zigzag course, the hill and dale path, of his mind, heart, and intuition during the war. It is a documentary record of things said frankly, even passionately, while the world storm has roared and raged. Though the book has its value for this present hour, it has definite historic content in many spots. It is as wild and dark as the war -- and it has the sanity of good war humor.”.
