Description: Amsterdam, Judocus Hondius, 1611. First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto (7" x 10-3/4") in somewhat later full calf leather; [viii], 64, [40], 65-292, [7] pages with a page of errata at rear. Complete with the 40-page section, bound in after page 64, rather than at the end, as in other copies. Illustrated with an engraved title page, 50 magnificent text engravings (of which 17 are maps), and 7 beautiful folding plans and maps. THE FIRST IMPORTANT HISTORY OF AMSTERDAM and one of the first accounts of the Dutch East India Company's maritime explorations around the globe. Includes reports of Barentsz's voyage to the Arctic in search of the North-East passage, Dutch Voyages to Greenland and the north in 1594-6, and early reports of Dutch exploration in Asia and Africa. Important American content includes accounts of Hudson's first two voyages (1607-1608) for the Muscovy Company of London. The engravings in the text are especially fine, and include early maps and views of what at the time were exotic regions. A Dutch edition was published three years after this first edition. Early 18th century name on title page and the top margin of following page; one of the double page maps/plans has a closed tear at the lower half of the inner edge; trimmed for binding, slightly shaving off the very bottom of the images; clean and well bound.
