Author: LOWELL, Robert Title: Typed Letter Signed (Tls) with Typed Manuscript of His Poem Those Before Us
Description: Boston, 13 February 1956. Letter. Two-page Typed Letter on both sides of an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of paper to Kitty Rice, the widow of Philip Rice, Associate Editor of the KENYON REVIEW, SIGNED "Cal." With the envelope and a Typed Manuscript of his poem "Those Before Us" (published in the Winter 1964 issue of KENYON REVIEW). The letter is a lovely tribute to Rice with Lowell recalling many memories of his time with him. In part: "..Phil was talking with heat about the world, when suddenly in mid-sentence he jumped, somehow with the sound of a pistol-report, he had lit an entire box of matches. And the other is of Phil gloomily watching a kitten out on the Gambier Main Street; the kitten was destroying very slowly and gracefully a shabby, dreary, all but powerless and wingless moth. And Phil said 'That's like Russia and Germany.' and I felt this was felt bitterly and to the marrow of his being. And finally I think of Ransom coming back from Cincinatti [sic], and talking about the 'High-powered' man he had discovered to edit the Review with him. Lightly toned, slight discoloration. Near Fine .
