Author: TOKLAS, Alice B Title: Autograph Letter Signed (Als)
Description: Paris, 9 May 1947. Letter. Fine closely written 2-1/2-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED composed within a year after Gertrude Stein's death on an 8" x 10-1/2" sheet folded into fours to friend Tony Scott SIGNED "Alice Toklas." With the original envelope addressed in Toklas's hand and SIGNED by her. Fine letter to Scott while he was attending Pomona College in Claremont, California, studying creative writing. Toklas begins: "No Jo Barry is doing nothing about anything. I suspect like the Richard Wrights he'll be clearing out -- His wife likes N.Y. She calls it the States. You know the kind. No one can change or even teach them. So there's nothing to be hoped from that source. Why can't you come over on your bill of rights. If you're not eligible who is? You know you don't have to attend lectures regularly -- you register and go for a bit and then gradually you go less and less until you don't go any more at all. Think about that. Fraser is Fraser -- definitely officially irrevocably. Spring has come -- the chestnuts from the Luxembourg Gardens are fragrant all the way down to here. At night when there is no noise you can smell them on the terrace. Basket [her dog] is rid of the worms.. It's so simple to commence from where it was last a pleasant moment with any Frenchman and so utterly impossible to do so except with the exceptional American.. Your grandmother sounds adorable -- she has such attractively combative reactions. Do you get your temper from her? Aren't grandparents fascinating people? They used to be. There is the same lamentable falling off in them probably that there is in everything and everyone else these days. Francis Rose's wife has written quite a brilliant book called The Eye of the Traveller in which she says that a Mrs. Beryl Shinn picked up on the beach at S. Francisco the shield of Sir Francis Drake. Can this be true? You will kindly see and let me know on what authority she says it? Much depends upon whether it is true or not. What is the matter with a type writer that skips a space. Crease from mailing. Fine in Fine envelope Anthony Scott was a playwright and novelist who visited Toklas and her partner Gertrude Stein on a regular basis when he was a G.I. in Paris.
