Description: London, J. Almon, 1780. Second Edition. Hardcover. Modern 3/4 red morocco leather with gilt lettering on the spine (5-1/4" x 8-1/2"), x, [ii], 191, [1], cix pages. HOWES B-968 "aa": "His chief defense against all charges"; LANDE 69; SABIN 9255. Complete with a folding letterpress table and 6 folding maps (the First Edition had 5 maps) hand-colored in outline, including the large folding map by Faden of the "Country in which the Army under Lt. General Burgoyne acted in the Campaign of 1777," the area around Lake Champlain and Lake George. Burgoyne began command of the British forces in Canada in 1777, planning to march from Quebec to New York City, but he was forced to surrender at Saratoga, giving the Americans their greatest victory to date, a victory critical to the eventual success of the American Revolution. This copy belonged to David Gelston (1744-1828) and is SIGNED three times by him: on the title page, the dedication page, and the first page of text. Gelston signed the Articles of Association in 1775; was a delegate to the Second, Third, and Fourth Provincial Congresses of New York 1775-1777; was a member of the State constitutional convention in 1777; was elected a member of the State assembly under the constitution of 1777 serving from 1777 to 1785; was speaker in 1784 and 1785; was a member of the last Continental Congress in 1789; served in the State senate 1791-1794, 1798, and 1802; and was canal commissioner in 1792. Bookplate and blindstamp on front endpaper of former owner, light foxing, few splits to maps but nothing missing; binding Fine. Overall Very Good .
