Description: Washington DC, 1935. Letter. Two handwritten letters on three sheets of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue stationery SIGNED by the First Lady as "E. R." and as "Eleanor" to her aunt Maude Gray (Mrs. David Gray), both with envelopes addressed in Eleanor's hand. The first letter, dated October 7, is 4 pages on 2 sheets and concerns arranging a visit. In part: "However it will be grand to take you to the cottage if you don't mind the drive.. The drive up the mountain was quite safe only the newspaper boys had never seen a western mountain and were scared pink!" The second letter, dated November 26, is 2 pages on one sheet and discusses gifts and Thanksgiving. In part: "Do you know of anyone who could buy the [?] [?]? My [?] friends are few!" Maude Gray was married to playwright and novelist David Gray, mentioned several times in these letters, who would serve as minister to Ireland from 1940 to 1947. Normal folds from mailing. Fine .
