Description: 7 August 1981. Letter. Short Typed Letter on personal letterhead SIGNED in full "Stephen Sondheim" addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Britton." In full: "Thank you so much for the invitation, but I'm afraid my middle-aged memory has failed me: where did I meet Reverend Britton? In any event, I won't be able to come to your dinner, as I'll be in rehearsal with a new show, but thank you again." The new show mentioned by Sondheim would have been MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG. Normal fold from mailing, otherwise Fine One of the most important figures in 20th-century theatre, Sondheim's works as composer and lyricist included A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM (1962), COMPANY (1970), FOLLIES (1971), A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (1973), SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET (1979), SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (1984), and INTO THE WOODS (1987). He was also known for writing the lyrics for WEST SIDE STORY (1957) and GYPSY (1959). He received an Academy Award, 8 Tony Awards (more than any other composer), 8 Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom.
