Description: Washington DC, 3 February 1978. Letter. On White House stationery (7" x 10-1/2") SIGNED by the president as "Jimmy" to Congressman Neal Smith of Iowa asking him to vote to create "a small Office of Consumer Representation." This bill, which would have created a consumer advocacy agency at the federal level, was defeated by the House of Representatives in a 227-189 vote on 8 February 1978, a victory for big business interests. Original transmittal envelope "By Special Messenger" stapled to the rear of the letter. With an Inauguration Day Official Cover postmarked 20 January 1977 in Plains, GA. Short tear along one fold. Fine .
