Title: Typed Letter Signed (Tls)
Description: Austria, 16 June 1969. Letter. A one-page TYPED LETTER SIGNED to a Doubleday editor on 5-3/4" x 8-1/4" Hinterholz 6, Kirchstetten stationery, where Auden lived for awhile. He is buried in a Kirchstetten churchyard. In part: "After various attempts, I have come to the conclusion that I simply cannot translate Yevtushenko's poems, that is to say, I can find no way of combining in English his 'informal' manner with his formal versification. (With Voznoshensky, I somehow found that I could).. I'm terribly sorry about this, but it is silly to try and hide one's incompetence." SIGNED "W. H. Auden," with ink copy notations in another hand at the bottom. With the typed envelope. Creases from folding, Very Good .
