Title: Sweet Was the Song
Description: (Roosevelt, NJ), (1956). First Trade Edition. Pamphlet. A small (5" x 3-1/8") stapled pamphlet with drawings and text by Ben Shahn. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Katherine Anne Porter to actor Douglas Watson who had recently starred in an experimental Off-Broadway production of Porter's PALE HORSE, PALE RIDER at the Jan Hus Theatre. She doesn't name Watson in the inscription, but this was acquired along with a letter to Watson [no longer available] and the context of the inscription makes it clear that it is to him. The inscription spread across the copyright page and the facing blank page. In full: "This is a pleasant sort of personal anniversary for me, as well as the Feast of Christmas. I wish to recall myself to your memory, to say again how I admired your work and your spirit in that very troubled play. But I'm still glad it happened, and I wish again to thank you with all my heart-- And as to those peach[?] [?], I am in a country where they grow now, but oh, I wasn't when your wife so sweetly sent me some! Please sing this little song to your children! Katherine Anne Porter Christmas 1958. Ill.: Ben Shahn. Fine .
