Description: New York, Limited Editions Club, 1932. Hardcover. Small folio (8-1/2" x 13") bound in full blind-stamped brown leather. Illustrated with beautiful line drawings and full-page color plates by Miguel Covarrubias. The first great novel about Africa by a black writer. Winner of the Prix Goncourt, one of France's highest literary awards, making Maran the first black author to win that honor. Of a total of 1500 copies SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page, this copy is not numbered (in place of the number is written in ink "Office Copy") and bears the Club's blindstamp stating it is one of 15 presentation copies. Laid in is the proof of one of the pages with a penciled comment in the upper corner in an unidentified hand about the page's appearance. Ill.: Miguel Covarrubias. Slight rubbing to the spine and corners with a small strip of leather peeled off on the rear cover. Near Fine in a Fine slipcase specially made for this copy by the publisher .
