He left as a rear admiral in 1951 and eventually published a definitive 15-volume history of the United States Navy in World War II. Copy #39 of 1500 illustrated by Lima de Freitas with 65 black-and-white text drawings and 5 double-page spreads, the latter having color hand-applied at the Walter Fischer Studio, and maps by Rafael Palacios.
