Title: The Public Men of the Revolution: Including Events from the Peace of 1783 to the Peace of 1815. In a Series of Letters
Description: Philadelphia, Carey and Hart, 1847. First Edition. Hardcover. Original blindstamped brown cloth. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author. First published in 1834, this is an enlarged edition with a biographical sketch of the author by his son. Howes S-1130; Sabin 93559: "An attack on Thomas Jefferson and a defense of the Federalist party." Franklin Delano Roosevelt's copy with his bold SIGNATURE "Franklin D. Roosevelt/Hyde Park" on the front endpaper along with the notation "Very fine copy." Roosevelt was sympathetic toward Jefferson, identifying with him as a leader who brought the government back into the hands of the people and who fashioned a government that served the best interests of the people rather than the interests of the privileged. On the pastedown opposite Roosevelt's signature is a pencil inscription by the former owner, A. Boyd Hamilton, State Printer of Pennsylvania in the mid-nineteenth century, dated 1887 presenting the book to his son. Hamilton's signature dated 1847 is also on the title page in ink. A fine example of a book from FDR's library with distinctly American content including much on George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Some chipping to the head of the spine. Near Fine .
