Title: A Voyage to the Eastern Part of Terra Firma, or the Spanish Main in South-America, During the Years 1801, 1802, 1803 & 1804
Description: New York, I. Riley and Co, 1806. First Edition. Hardcover. Three octavo volumes in contemporary calf leather with black leather spine labels. "Translated by an American Gentleman," who happens to be Washington Irving, and this happens to be his first book. His translation was in collaboration with his brother, Peter, and George Caines. BAL 10096: Setting A of the text for Volume I; State B of Volume II. Illustrated with a large (26-1/2" x 17-3/4") folded map in the first volume which has two small tape repairs but is otherwise clean and sound. BAL calls for the books to be 8-3/8" scant x 5"; the first two volumes are slightly larger: 8-1/2" x 5-1/8." The third volume, oddly, is 4-7/8" x 8-1/4" and lacks the table of contents usually bound at the end as well as the advertisements (pages 289-296). Bindings strong with only mild dings and wear; contents fairly clean throughout. Old indecipherable ink signature on title pages of first two volumes with the 19th century printed bookplate on the front pastedowns of all three volumes of Dr. Alfred Creigh, likely the historian. Very Good set Field 421: "Beside his account of the slaughter and destruction of Indians during the conquest of their nations, the author gives a portrait of the Indians before the arrival of the Europeans." Hill page 238: "This is an important account of Venezuela giving a description of the country and people and also accounts of growth and production of cocoa, indigo, sugar, cotton, coffee, and tobacco.
