[spine repaired to top compartment and front hinge of lower compartment /spine and hinges rubbed/edges rubbed and tips worn] All Edges Gilt Frontis.+woodcut titlepage + v-viii [=contents] +200pp.Page 87-88 lacks a corner which has been replaced and the missing words filled in in ink.There are some other signs of use but not affecting the text or illustrations and all pages well attached. I have seen other copies of this book with the 6 plates hand colored but according to R.McLean in VICTORIAN BOOK DESIGN & COLOUR PRINTING he states that The Playmate nor its sister magazine The Charm had colored illustrations .."in neither were coloured illustrations used.."p54 The contents includes poetry, stories and fairytales, factual information and historical sketches but despite its variety of content it survived only about one year.
