He spends his leisure drinking and listening to the controversial lecturers. He meets a religious girl who marries him hoping to reform him but he persist in drunken habits. Selling the Bible for a dram it falls into his estranged father's hands who has by now reformed and taken the pledge and is a speaker at Temperance Meetings. Finally the young man also renounces strong drink, the father recognizes his son and they move to the country "where aided by true Christian principles .. the course of his life was altered".
