Description: Paris, Jean Baptiste Loyson 1659 full-page copperplate engravings (65 of 67 -the missing plates are laid in in facsimile) Emblems are numbered but number 52 IS SKIPPED & it is also omitted in the contents list ) Many plates are signed Briot or Marie Briot. 8vo speckled roan on 4 raised bands spine gilt (edges and corners worn (abime)/hinges held by cords/missing half of the lower compartment and quite some leather loss along hinges however covers are still well attached) Frontispiece + titlepage +(10p=Preface) +(8p contents) +half title to verso of first emblem.LACKS emblem 5 and the text on its recto. plate 19 is damaged but verso is blank at this point so no loss of text. Page 249 faces plate 19 and is stained where the damage was repaired but is still well readable. Plates are numbered from 1 to 68 but there is no number 52 and the contents list also omits any number 52 but the pagination & signatures follow through without a gap. The title has an ownership partly crossed through and a bookplate seems to have been removed from the pastedown. Some 8 leaves at the front have some marginal small wormholes and a corner is torn off page 339/340 just affecting 2 letters of the bottom line on each side. Usual foxing but also a few gatherings browned and two plates with ink marks.Chetham's Library says the plates are after Alciatus and also confirms that the number 52 is omitted.
