Paper label to spine, octavo. Corners chipped, chafing and edgewear, scratches and some stains to boards. Binding solid. Private library stamp to inside board and front endpaper, Redwood Library bookplate to inside board. Some minor pencilling to a few pages, scattered foxing to margins and some browning to text throughout. Lacks half-title or errata page. This was first issued in 1814 shortly after the British set fire to the White House. Carey calls on the various factions in Washington to work together to save the country. The book was immensely popular and by 1815 was in its sixth edition. Matthew Carey [1760-1839] was born in Dublin, worked as a publisher and immigrated to America in 1784 where he established his publishing firm in Philadelphia which published the first Catholic Bible in America [The Carey Bible] and some of the earliest atlases of America. The firm later became the well known concern of Carey and Lee [1824]. Good .
