Lovely early, assumed first edition of this title, in deep burgundy-red boards with gilt titles to front and spine. Privately printed. Boards and textblock bright, clean and tight with the slightest hint of wear at board corners, but no bumping or tears. Fore-edge and bottom edges untrimmed. High quality paper. A number of pages unopened at the fore edge and some opened a little unevenly. Some newsprint off-setting to endpapers, with a newspaper article mentioning the book and two stapled typewritten sheets about Needham laid in between the back endpapers. A former owner's printed and illustrated bookplate is carefully attached to the front pastedown. Frontispiece photograph of author. Illustrated throughout with photos. Beautiful Copy. Extraordinarily detailed history of Needham, Mass. which became a town in its own right in 1711 when the Governer of Massachusetts approved the townspeople's petition. Early settlers relied primarily on agriculture. Saw and grist mills were opened along the Charles River through the 18th century. Extension of the rail and land speculation encouraged settlement. Knitters from the English Midlands migrated to Needham and the surrounding towns where Needham manufacturers made knit goods, underwear, hats and shoes. In April 1881, West Needham was granted permission by the General Court to separate from Needham and form the new town of Wellesley and this volume includes the history of that town. Kuhn Clarke had earlier published of a collection of epitaphs from graveyards in the Needham area. Very Good Plus .
