Claims On the United-States By the Late Contractor for the State of New -York, &c.
New-York, War Department. First Edition, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Hardcover. 179, 24pp. Paper over boards, title to spine. Binding is shaken and split in 2, contents are tanned, foxed and partially dampstained, text is complete. It is said that the name "Uncle Sam" originated as result of Anderson's claim. Anderson sold meat to the US Army, which came from a meatpacker named Samuel Wilson. The meat was stamped EAUS (Elbert Anderson United States). The soldiers joked that the initials stood for Elbert Anderson and Uncle Sam. A very scarce book. Poor.

Light shelf wear, very light scattered foxing, contents mostly clean and sound, binding is tight. The handwritten letter, written and signed by Edward E. Hale is pasted in after title page. The letter explains to the owner (Rowland Hazard) that this book is a translation of Thomas Anburey's "Travels Through the Interior Parts of America by an Officer." An unusual association copy. Good.

Stories of the Last Battles of the American Revolution
New York, Philip J. Cozans. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. Soft cover. 64pp. No date, but circa 1850s. Decorative stiff wraps, red, gold blue and white decoration and lettering. Covers are worn, soiled and almost detached. Contents are age-toned and have some occasional foxing and soiling, and edgewear to first few pages, but are otherwise complete. Numerous engravings throughout the text. This scarce title is from Uncle Philip's Library for Good Boys and Girls, which lists on the rear cover 6 additional titles: First Battles Amer. Revolution, Last Battles, Discontented Squirrel, Pleasant Stories in Rhyme, Stories for Good Boys and Stories for Good Girls. Fair.
