On the scale of 4 miles to an inch, by John Bartholomew, F.R.G.S. Edinburgh: Adam & Charles Black, n.d. (circa 1870-1890). Three color sheets, folding, mounted on linen. The North and Midlands Sections are each 37 1/2 by 81 1/2 inches (95 x 206 cm); the South Section is 28 3/4 by 81 1/2 inches (73 x 206 cm). All fold to 9 1/2 by 6 3/4 inches (24 x 17 cm). A fine copy housed in slightly rubbed and soiled green cloth pull-off slipcase, with publisher's paper label on the front, gilt-stamped title and a hand-lettered label on one side. Unfolded, this is a huge and wonderful map. .

Ffep through title page, pp. 505 - rfep detached. Map with North and South America, Spain's Western coast on the right, Azores, Canary, Madera and Cape Verd Islands, inset illustration of the port of Havana with identified buildings on the lower left. Map has a few small closed tears, no loss. Title page continued: "In four parts. I. An account of the discovery of America by the celebrated Christopher Columbus; with a description of the Spanish Indian colonies in the West Indies. II. Their settlements on the continent of South America. III. Their settlements in Peru, Chili, Paraguay, and Rio de La Plata. IV. Their settlements in Terra Firma. Illustrated with 28 fine little engravings by Gaucher, Pauquet, Villerey, Bovinet et al. after Lemire et Marillier, Fragonard fils, LeBrun and others. (Title-pages offer conflicting numbers as to the total amount of plates: Vols. 1 & 2 call for 32; vols. 3 & 4 call for 36. This copy has 28.) These show French scenes, including Roman monuments, local festivals and customs, author portraits, etc. A delightful collection of French travel writings, charmingly illustrated. Green morocco, quite worn and dried out, rebacked in cloth, two outer hinges starting, with library markings. .
