The Builder Ltd. London, 1961. First Edition, Paperback. Very Good/N/A. illustrated by numerous b/w. drawings & cartoons; "The great country houses of England are unique. Set in huge and magnificent parklands, designed by outstanding craftsmen and filled with exquisite furniture and pictures they form a collection that for fascination and sheer delight is unrivalled in either hemisphere. Two world wars have drained England and now the once-great families, no longer able to maintain their enormous houses and estates, must find some means of doing so. By inviting the public to see their houses they have opened a new and enchanting world, and many owners have gone to great pains to make these visits more exciting and pleasurable. This book is the story of one such family and one such house. Family and house are, of course, entirely fictional."; light wear at spine bottom; a scarce title; 63 pages. Ashe, Geoffrey, The Tale of the Tub: A Survey of the Art of Bathing Through the Ages
Ashe, Geoffrey
The Tale of the Tub: A Survey of the Art of Bathing Through the Ages
Newman Neame Limited, London, 1950. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth), Illustrated by: George Napier Sprod. Very Good Condition/Fair Condition. ‘The Tale of the Tub’ (with apologies to Jonathan Swift) is the amusing and instructive product of a new author-artist partnership. Geoffrey Ashe, scholar, teacher and author of tracts on Indian mysticism, has surveyed the art of bathing since prehistoric times with a twinkle in his eye and his tongue in his cheek. In the course of his research he has exploded historical myths and added to the store of knowledge on the subject. Sprod, an Australian with a sense of humour in the best tradition of Punch - to which he is a regular contributor - has captured the lighter side of the extraordinary techniques employed by human beings to keep themselves clean. In addition to its entertainment and educational value, 'The Tale of the Tub' includes a useful guide to the most interesting baths and spas in England and Wales. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 64 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Slight foxing to rear endpapers. Dust Jacket is fully intact, but has small holes or chips down flap edges and other signs of wear to top and bottom edges, corners etc. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Red titles spine & front;. blue cloth; illustrated by b/w. drawings. Illustrator: George Napier Sprod. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Category: Humour; History. McManus, George
Bringing Up Father (Forever Nuts)
NBM Publishing, New York, 2009. First Edition, Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. 9781561635566 In 1904, a young George McManus was hired by Pulitzer's New York World as a cartoonist. While he was there he created such strips as The Newlyweds which many comics historians consider the first family comic strip. In 1912, William Randolph Hearst hired McManus away to start a comic strip about a guy called Jiggs, a lower class man who came into a lot of money. With their new wealth, Maggie, Jiggs' wife, wanted to enter the upper crust of society but Jiggs just wanted to hang out with his old friends at the local bar playing cards and pool and eat his simple favorite foods. This is the classic strip Bringing Up Father which became the second longest comic strip of the 20th Century. Now, for the first time, Forever Nuts presents all the dailies of the first two years of this classic comic strip, many of which have not been reprinted since they first appeared over 90 years ago. Discover why McManus became known as one of the greats in the field. Illustrated end-papers. First Thus. Size: Oblong 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 192 pages. Turner, Jean
East Anglian Privies: A Nostalgic Trip Down the Garden Path
Countryside Books, Newberry, Berkshire, 1995. First Edition, Softcover. Very Good Condition. When Jean Turner was a child in the Norfolk countryside in the 1940’s, the family loo was an earth closet at the end of the garden. This was emptied on a weekly basis by her father and the contents buried in their vegetable patch. Few of these outside privies have survived into the 1990s, so.Jean Turner decided to record a dying species before it was too late. Vivid, anecdotal, gruesome, crammed with outlandish information and shamingly funny, East Anglian Privies is a descriptive and pictorial tribute to the Iavatories of yesteryear, It takes us from the unpleasing Middle Ages ('Beware of emptynge pysse pottes, and pyssing in chyrnnes') to the misadventures of a 'night cart' man called George. Having hung his jacket on the cart and been too slow to stop it falling into the load he was attempting to fish it out of the tank. His partner expressed the view that the jacket would not be of much more use, 'Um not worried abou' t'jacket' George replied, 'Urn tryin' to get me sandwiches out o' the pocket!' Jean Turner lives near Beccles and has become well known locally through her writing. She is also the author of Tin Bath Night, an affectionate look back to the weekly childhood scrub in front of the fire. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 128 pages. no Dust Jacket as published..
