[BYWATER, Abel.]
The Sheffield dialect, in conversations "uppa are hull arston." With a copious glossary, and an introductory note on the sound of the letters A and O. Written by a Shevvild chap.
Sheffield: printed for the author, by A. Whitaker and Co., 1834. 14cm. 108pp. COPAC: Oxford, Leeds, York Minster. Skeat & Nodal, page 130 'This is a collection of six selected numbers, which were issued separately between 1830-4. There is what is called "an Introductory Note on the sound of the letters A and O." This matter is not genuine. It is very crude and misleading! Bound with: [BYWATER, Abel.] The gossips. [In three parts.] [Sheffield: Saxton and Chaloner, N.D.] 14cm. 32pp. COPAC: Leeds (c.1839?). Skeat & Nodal list an edition of 24pp. Bound with: [BYWATER, Abel.] The Shevvild chap's fairin'. [Sheffield: Saxton and Chaloner, N.D.] 18pp. Not in COPAC, although its prequel is held at York Minster and Leeds. Skeat & Nodal, page 131. Bound with: The tell tale. [Sheffield: Saxton and Chaloner, N.D.] 14cm. 26pp. COPAC: Leeds, York Minster [183-?]. Not in Skeat & Nodal. Bound with: [BYWATER, Abel.] The budget.[Sheffield: Saxton and Chaloner, N.D.] 14cm. 26pp. COPAC: Leeds [183-?]. Not in Skeat & Nodal. Near contemporary blind-stamped cloth, aeg. Extremes rubbed with slight wear; light spotting to prelims. A collection of Abel Bywater's scarce early works. He wrote extensively on the Sheffield dialect, often under the pseudonym of 'The Shevvild Chap'. Most of the titles here featured in his later publications, but here represent their first appearance in print. The book was sold in 1980 for £30 - in a bookseller's note on the front free endpaper it is stated to be 'rare' - we would not disagree.
