Being parts I-V of this eventual seven part work. Jean Appier produced the text and the engravings for this work. His father was an engineer for the Duke of Lorraine, and Appier himself was an artist. He collaborated with Francois Thybourel, the physician and mathematician to produce this work. A fascinating work, with sections on a variety of exploding devices including treasure chests and baskets of eggs. Collated, title page for part II has been bound as the title page for part I. Lacking the preliminary pages for part I, which starts at the text (C1, page 17). In-text illustrations throughout the work. This scarce work influenced Appier's later book on pyrotechnics 'La Pyrotechnie&apos. In the orignal French and in the original vellum binding. A very scarce and fascinating technological work. In the contemporary vellum binding. Externally, generally smart. The vellum is slightly wrinkled. Several spots and marks to boards. Small loss to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. London, G. Smith, 1738. Leather. A very scarce and sought after book. Volume one only. Fourteen plates including frontis, ten of which are folding. Benjamin Baddam (c1693–1740) was a printer and compiler of the Memoirs of the Royal Society. He compiled an abridgement of the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions. It was printed for him between 1738 and 1744 by Godfrey Smith in ten volumes, with 131 folding plates drawn by G. Smith and engraved by James Hulett, under the title Memoirs of the Royal Society, being a new abridgment of the Philosophical Transactions for the years 1665 to 1735. Previous abridgements of the Philosophical Transactions had been carried out on a piecemeal basis, whereas Baddam's version provided continuity and uniformity for the first time. The boards are missing. The text block is firm. Internally the pages are generally clean, with slight browning. There is some very mild spotting, which is mostly limited to the first and last couple of pages. There is the occasional handling mark. The back endpaper is chipped. Benjamin Baddam (c1693–1740) was a printer and compiler of the Memoirs of the Royal Society. He compiled an abridgement of the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions. It was printed for him between 1738 and 1744 by Godfrey Smith in ten volumes, with 131 folding plates drawn by G.
