[Unattributed / Anti-communism & Anti-CCF]
Communism and the C.C. F. ; An Exposure of the Schemes of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, Showing ... That Its Plans to Socialize Industry Include the Confiscation of Canadian Farm Lands
S.L. Anonymously Published, 1933. First Edition, First Printing. Self-Wrappers. pp. 10. 8vo. measuring 23 cm. Twice-stapled self-wrappers. One very faint spot to the left-margin of the first leaf, otherwise, remarkably well-preserved and without blemish; near fine. Not found in Weinrich. Corresponds to OCLC #461452694 indicating only but one institutional holding at time of cataloguing, held at the University of Alberta.
¶ A highly rare, decidedly anti-CCF, pamphlet which levels broad (and spurious) accusations against the social reform agenda of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and that of its leadership, portraying the party as mere lieutenants of the Russians (i.e. communist), alleging that the party drew "extraneous inspiration" that was "tinged with a foreign dye," an unmistakable reference to the newly formed Soviet Union. At times resorting to ad hominem attacks, the text cites J.S. Woodsworth’s involvement in the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike as evidence of the party's subversive ties, and warning of a broader CCF agenda to nationalize private property and critical industries, ban churches, prohibit the national anthem, and undermine Canada’s Christian foundations, relying on dubious and unattributed testimony to support these claims. Framing CCF policies as thinly veiled communism, the pamphlet presents a staunch defence of capitalism and warns of the impending danger should the party gain federal or provincial legislative power. Published two years prior to the 1935 Canadian general election, it reflects broader establishment anxieties over the party’s swift rise - one which would witness the CCF gain seven seats alongside the ideologically-aligned Social Credit Party of Alberta, which secured seventeen under the leadership of John Blackmore. While the authorship remains unclear, the initiative undoubtedly emanated from the party’s staunch political and ideological opponents on the right, chiefly members of the Conservative Party, which were themselves closely aligned with religious and business interests who expressed antipathy and reservations regarding the social and political ramifications of CCF policies.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce; John Collins (Illust.)
Fallacies of Socialism
Montréal, Quebec, The Canadian Chamber of Commerce, 1962. First Edition. Stapled Wraps. pp. 32. 12mo. measuring 5.5" x 8". Illustrated, twice-stapled, card covers bearing the crest of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce to the lower-right margin of the front cover. Humorous illustrations throughout. See OCLC #1127779895. An anti-socialist, and anti-communist booklet produced by Canadian commercial interests to defend capitalism in the face of the growing strength of the Canadian social credit movement, namely the CCF. Not found in Weinrich. This booklet consists of a series of nine articles which appeared in the monthly News Letter of the Department of Economic Development of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce between January and October 1961. "Fallacies of Socialism" was written for several reasons. Firstly, it was thought worthwhile to state some of the more frequently expressed economic fallacies and tag them for what they are - socialist. Secondly, each short piece was aimed at exposing a fallacy and giving a concise, positive answer to the question raised. Thirdly, it was hoped that they would make a contribution towards clearing up the misunderstandings resulting from a planned and calculated smear campaign directed at our economic system of competitive enterprise. We all recognize that the most effective way to fight communism and socialism is to make our own systems of democracy and capitalism shine forth before men so that they will be immediately recognized as superior to any opposing systems.

Curtis, Roy; Angelica Balbanoff (Intro.)
Italy: Victory Through Revolution! ; "Freedom for All Pamphlet No. 2
New York, Socialist Party, N.D. [Circa 1943?]. Freedom for All Series. Stapled Wraps. pp. 30, [1]. 12mo. measuring 5" x 7". Illustrated, twice-stapled, card covers. Bright, clean, and unmarked; fine. Corresponds to OCLC #17331142. 'The elimination of the chief, most responsible tool of the fascist counter-revolution is only the first and easiest step on the long and thorny road which will lead the Italian and the non-Italian masses to their definite triumph over fascism. The Italian masses have proved that the pursuit of freedom was at the bottom of all their struggle and aspirations. The fascist yoke, with all the sufferings and humiliations it implied, has not succeeded in eradicating what is so deeply rooted in the hearts and brains of these uncompromising forerunners of a new Socialist society.

Illustrated, twice-stapled, card covers. Comprises of an overview of the developing Canadian co-operative movement, its agricultural Western-Canadian genesis, its social and economic raison d'être, and the challenge it posed to the existing political and economic order in the Dominion. The author urges for the continued theoretical, philosophical and practical development of the co-operative movement by urging readers to reinforce their knowledge with a proposed list of historical, political and economic texts. Bright, clean, and unmarked with firm, stapled binding. Highly uncommon early Canadian co-operative movement pamphlet with no known Canadian institutional holdings at time of cataloguing. Corresponds to OCLC #44628585 (indicating only two American institutional holdings). Not found in Peel, BAC/LAC, University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections, et al. Weinrich 1235. Born at Newcastle-on-Tyne, England around 1875, he was a telegraph operator for the North Eastern Railway. In 1897, he took part in the organization of telegraph operators and was elected the first President of an association created that year. He came to Canada in 1904 with his wife and their two children and farmed near Brandon until 1905 when he was appointed an accountant in the Canadian Pacific Railway district superintendent’s office at Brandon. Transferred to Saskatoon in 1908, he remained there until 1911 when he joined the editorial staff of the Saskatoon Phoenix. During the First World War, he served on the Returned Soldier’s Employment Bureau and was Secretary of the Returned Soldier’s Welcome and Aid League at Saskatoon. In 1918, he returned to farming on his own farm near Hanley, Saskatchewan and joined the Saskatchewan Grain Growers’ Association in 1919, returning that year to the Saskatoon Phoenix as its editor. In 1920, he returned to Winnipeg to become Associate Editor for the Grain Growers Guide (1920-1925). In September 1925, he was put in charge of publicity for the newly-formed Manitoba Wheat Pool and was Editor of its official organ, The Scoop Shovel (predecessor of Manitoba Co-operator). He also served as secretary of the Manitoba Co-operative conference. In 1936, when the Manitoba Co-operator was discontinued and The Western Producer became the official journal of the co-operative movement in Manitoba, he became its Editor, serving until retirement in 1947." [Co-operative Commonwealth Federation]
Ccf Representations to the National War Labor Board ; Ottawa, May 12, 1943
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, [Co-operative Commonwealth Federation], June, 1943. First Edition, First Printing. Stapled Wraps. pp. 16. 8vo. measuring 22 cm. Illustrated, twice-stapled, self-wrappers bearing an image of a metal-smith at work to the centre of the front cover; accompanied with additional black-and-white images of trades workers (including unusually for its time chiefly of women at work). Printed amidst the Second World War, and - arguably - at the height of the co-operative movement's influence, the present pamphlet offers a critical examination of national labor-industrial relations, and would urge parliamentarians and business interests to recognize, re-order, and improve working conditions for employees nationwide. Offering a firm defence of labor organizations by pointing to similar acceptance of such collectives in the United Kingdom, it would repudiate existing attitudes towards labour unions (and their right to organize and collectively bargain), and highlighting the "unfairness of present wage policy", and would offer a set of proposed remedies for the shortcomings of existing wage, and labour policy. A few light spots to the front cover, else, near fine. See OCLC #1006677784 & #224434761, indicating only but three Canadian institutional holdings at time of cataloguing. Weinrich 2531 which notes: "presented by Clarence Gillis, Angus MacInnis, and David Lewis on 12th May, 1943. .

[The World Anticommunist League & The World Youth Anticommunist League] & The Mexican Anticommunist Federation [Federacion Mexicana Anticommunista - FEMACO]; Prof. Lic. Raimundo Guerrero (Foreword)
Proceedings of the 6th Wacl [World Anticommunist League] and the 4th Wyacl [World Youth Anticommunist League] Conferences ; August 23-28, 1972 [in] Mexico City
Mexico City, Mexico, WACL, WYACL & FEMACO, 1972. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. pp. 216 + [30 unnumbered leaves of photographic plates]. Small 4to. measuring 7.5" x 10.5". Bound in illustrated navy-blue cloth over boards with gilt lettering to the front board. Generously illustrated with dozens of (chiefly black-and-white, some colour) photographic plates capturing conference proceedings and participants. Provides a comprehensive record of the conference proceedings organized by the Mexican affiliate of the World Anti-Communist League (WACL), namely the Federación Mexicana Anticomunista (FEMACO), comprising a detailed list of delegates from participating nations - including Australia, Canada, South Korea, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Thailand, South Vietnam, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Lesotho, Liberia, France, the United Kingdom, West Germany, Italy, Sweden, the United States, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua - along with representatives holding observer and candidate status. Prefaced with messages of support from key anti-Communist leaders, such as Chiang Kai-shek, Ferdinand E. Marcos, Park Chung-hee, Leabua Jonathan, and Nguy n V n Thi u. Outlines the detailed programme of events for the week-long milieu, as well as printed texts of proposals, studies, deliberations, and resolutions, many of which include sharp criticisms of the Soviet Union, the People’s Republic of China, their allied states and security apparatuses. A rare extant copy offering valuable insight into the operations and rhetoric of this unusual, virulently anti-Communist and far-right, Cold War organization, later to be implicated in myriad allegations of wrongdoing. Light rubbing to the cloth extremities, contents uniformly without blemish; near fine and housed in very good, illustrated, dustjacket, showing small loss to the lower-right margin of the front panel and one short closed tear (dustjacket now housed in protective mylar cover). Overall, very good+. Highly rare. Equally rare amongst institutional holdings. Corresponds to OCLC #123216394 which records only two holdings at time of cataloguing. Rare indeed.
¶ Founded in 1966 in Taipei, Taiwan, as a global coalition of right-wing groups opposing communism, the WACL evolved from the Asian People's Anti-Communist League (APACL). Supported and led by staunch anti-Communist figures such as Chiang Kai-shek (Taiwan), Park Chung-hee (South Korea), John K. Singlaub (USA), and Charles A. Willoughby (USA), the WACL backed authoritarian regimes, paramilitary groups, and anti-Communist insurgencies, including the Nicaraguan Contras. It would subsequently face criticism for its ties to extremists, former Nazis, and death squads, particularly in Latin America. At the close of Cold War in 1990, the organization would rebrand as the the World League for Freedom and Democracy (WFLD).
