[Ukrainian Canadian War Veterans' Association]
Grand Reunion and Get-Together of Ukrainian Canadian Veterans in Winnipeg ; Beginning Saturday, May 16th [1964], Ukrainian Canadian; [New Opinion, Volume XX, No. 1-2, January - April, 1964]
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Ukrainian Canadian War Veterans' Association, 1964. First Edition, First Printing. Card Covers. pp. 19, [1]. 8vo. measuring 6" x 9". Pictorial, twice-stapled, card covers. Programme printed upon the occasion of a reunion of Canadian veterans of Ukrainian descent, held to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko. Comprises of a detailed programme of events surrounding the occasion, various congratulatory messages from various civic, political, and religious leaders. A brief history of the organization, printed text of poems, articles, and a questionnaire for those interested in joining the organization. Bright, clean, and unmarked; fine. Unrecorded in commerce. Not found in OCLC, Peel, BAC/LAC, University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections, et al. It is fitting indeed that members of the Ukrainian Canadians [War] Veterans' Association should mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko for there is a close association between the poet and veterans. Taras Shevchenko, the beloved national poet of Ukraine, was a great, articulate writer in the cause of freedom. And the ideals of freedom he so fiercely expounded were as fiercely upheld by those of Ukrainian descent who fought with such distinction for Canada in two World Wars and the Korean conflict". - From a prefatory message by Duff Roblin.

Bubniuk, Stepahnia (Ed.); Halia Hawryluk (Ed); [Multiplte Contributors], et al.
Zhinochnyi Svit [Žìno Iy Svìt] | Woman's World ; Nineteen, Bound, Annual Volumes Encompassing: 1950, 1952-1969; Comprising 228 Issues in Total
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Ukrainian Women's Organization of Canada [Vydai e Orhanizatsii a Ukrainok kanady] | Printed by the New Pathway Publishers Ltd. [Novy shli akh], 1950, 1952-1969. First Edition, First Printings. Hardcover. Irregular pagination; each issue comprising of 24-32 pages. Small 4to's, uniformly measuring 8" x 11". Variously-bound in maroon, navy-blue, and green cloth over boards, gilt lettering to the spines and front boards. Featuring striking, illustrated, card covers originally published monthly in thrice-stapled, self-wrappers; the present selection has been bound in annual volumes, each incorporating twelve issues. Our offering comprises a near-consecutive run of this most important Ukrainian-Canadian women's periodical published between the years 1950-1969; lacking only Vol. II (1951). The journal would chronicle the rich, and varied Ukrainian settlements of Canada with many articles on prominent women and men in the community, "old-country" recipes, sewing patterns, news from Canada and Ukraine, nationalist Ukrainian exhortations, announcements of family events, homilies, events generally affecting the Ukrainian diaspora, government advertisements encouraging migration, records of deaths, alongside rich diversions into poetry, music, literary discussions and criticism. Additionally, nearly all volumes are rich with many black-and-white photographs, portraits, illustrations, and many period advertisements by sponsoring local and national businesses, including many small Ukrainian firms active throughout the prairies. Represented amongst them are: the T. Eaton Co. The Hudson's Bay Company, Carpathia Credit Union Society, various Ukrainian-Canadian Book Clubs (aka Prosvita Societies), Ukrainian tailors, bakeries, et al. Excepting a brief "English Section", and the occasional advertisement which was printed in English, the text is, otherwise, exclusively in Ukrainian. Exceedingly rare to be offered in commerce, particularly so as a set; indeed, our offering being the only extant copy available at time of cataloguing. Equally scarce amongst institutional holdings; not found in Peel, incomplete runs available at LAC/BAC, University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections, University of Minnesota. Not found in Fisher. To be distinguished from a, similarly-titled, sister publication published out of Toronto. See OCLC #1639861 & 1796594. Commencing publication in 1950 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, home to one of the most significant population of Ukrainian émigrés, "Zhinochnyi svit", or, "Woman's World", would be the chief publication of choice amongst Ukrainian-Canadian women with an active readership throughout the nation. Prior to its formation as a separate entity, the magazine was published as a women's page in the "New Pathway", a Ukrainian semi-weekly, similarly published out of Winnipeg. Later, under the direction and purview of the Winnipeg-based, Ukrainian Women's Organization, an affiliate of the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada, the periodical would act upon the chief aims of the Federation as adopted in their First Convention held in Saskatoon in 1934, namely: "i. To foster and promote Ukrainian culture and traditions; ii. To acquaint members, and Ukrainian-Canadian women in general, with Canadian culture, with the Canadian way of life, and with activities in the community; ultimately to develop a better Canadian citizenship; iii. To establish courses in sewing, home economics, child welfare, and also to publish books and pamphlets useful and interesting to women; iv. To establish and aid humanitarian organizations (such as the Canadian Red Cross, Help the Children's Fund, Ukrainian Canadian Relief Fund, Ukrainian Canadian Gold Cross, etc.); v. To bring up Ukrainian youth to be worthy Canadian citizens as well as good Ukrainians".
