A nonce volume of four sermons, with the one on education by Furneaux being probably of more interest in this secular and profane age. Furneaux (1726 - 1783), an independent minister, was a staunch advocate of the rights of non-conformists and active in the Coward Trust for improving academic education. He also edited, but never published, some of Chandler's works. None of the sermons can be said to be truly rare, but they are uncommon: ESTC locates 15 of the first item; 10 (3 only in North America) of the second; 14 (3 in North America) of the third; and 19 of Chandler's sermon.

GWYTHER (James), Rev.:
Evangelical Preaching. An address delivered in Nether Chapel, Sheffield, on October 10th, 1836, at the Autumnal Meeting of the Congregational Union of England and Wales. By the Rev. James Gwyther, of Manchester,
Manchester: Henry H. Tubbs...; London: Jackson, Walford, & Hodder. 1867 ?FIRST EDITION. ?ONLY EDITION. Large 12mo, 174 x 117 mms., pp. 23 [24 blank], disbound. In a note before the text Gwyther states that "It was never designed for the press, but merely for the ear of a popular assembly...." Referring to preachers who do not espouse true evangelicanism, he comments, "Let there be no mistake, however, with regard to our references here. We are intimating no danger to the Gospel , either from professed friends or from avowed foes. Never were these in their nature, in their varied forms, and in their vast numbers, more really formidable. Hume and Gibbon, Rousseau, Voltaire, and Paines were less to be dreaded than these." Perhaps he might also have in mind Byron's lines in Don Juan: "Christians have burnt each other, quite persuaded/ That all the apostles would have done as they did." Completely untraced.

MOREHEAD (Robert):
A Series of Discourses on the Principles of Religious Belief, as connected with Human Happiness and Improvement. Third Edition [volume 1].
Edinburgh: Printed by George Ramsay & Company, for Archibald Constable and Company...., 1810, 1816. FIRST EDITION OF VOLUME 2. 2 volumes. 8vo, 212 x 128 mms., pp. xvi, 446; xii, 467 [468 blank], contemporary calf, with Arabesque pattern in blind on each cover, vine leaf ornament on spine with the same ornament replicate din each cover of the covers, morocco labels (fragments on volume 1; very slight wear to joints, but a very good set in an unusual binding. Morehead (1777 - 1842) had his eye on the philosophers and writers of the Scottish Enlightenment, and many of the topics in these sermons anticipate his later works, two of which, Dialogues on Natural and Revealed Religion (1830) and Philosophical Dialogues (1845) were designed as sequels to Hume's Dialogues concerning Natural Religion (1779). There are two sermons in volume one on natural and revelated religion; a sermon in volume two, "On the Distinction of Ranks in Society," would appear to be a clear allusion to John Millar's Observations Concerning the Distinction of Ranks in Society (1771).

ROCHESTER. (PARSONS (Thomas [sic, for Robert]):
A Sermon Preach'd at the Funeral Of the Right Honourable John Earl of Rochester, who Died at Woodstock-Park, July 26. 1680. and was Buried at Spilsbury in Oxfordshire, Aug. 9. By Thomas [sic] Parsons, M. A. Chaplain to the Right Honourable Anne Countess-Dowager of Rochester. The Fourteenth Edition.
London: Printed for Richard Baldwin..., n. d., [1765]. 8vo (in 4s), pp. 31 [32 adverts], disbound; title-page almost detached at inner margin. Parsons' sermon was first published in 1680 and frequently reprinted. Here the title-page adds a long homily above the imprint about the publication of Rochester's poems. ESTC T87649 locates copies at L, C, and O, but notes, probably inaccurately, "The author's name is given incorrectly on the titlepage; by Robert Parsons, Rector of Oddington." Robert Parsons is, of course, correct, but he is not described in this copy as "Rector of Oddington."
