Held At the University, On 4th April 1959." Photograph of Procession of Protest. Dr Alty was then vice-chancellor of Rhodes University, Chairman of the Association of Universities of the British Commonwealth, Chairman of the Committee of Principals, S.A. Universites, and Chairman, Fort Hare Council. The address was to complain about the provision of the bills which sought to interfere in the domestic affairs of universities by, 1. establishing new institutions specifically for non-white students, 2. removal of non-white students from existing institutions, the disaffiliation of Fort Hare from Rhodes and its demotion to the status of a tribal college.
