Delpire, 1958"From April 1955, when he secured a Guggenheim Fellowship (with recommendations from Walker Evans, Edward Steichen, Meyer Shapiro, Alexey Brodovitch, and Alexander Liberman), to June 1956, Robert Frank made a number of short trips out from New York and one long (nine-month) journey to the West Coast in a 1950 Ford to photograph America. From the more than twenty thousand images (on 687 rolls of film) that resulted, Frank eventually chose 83 of them and arranged them into four chapters, each beginning with a flag image.. Photographic Image, carte de visite :(circa 1875) an Albumen print measuring 3-3/8 by 2-1/4 mounted on a car dmeasuring 4-1/4 by 2-1/2, back stamp of Mrs C.A. N. Smith, No 840 Broadway, New York. Artist. Not a great deal is known of this 19th C woman photographer. Not many of her images survive. Yale has two Cartes de Visite, acabinet card and a tintype.Mass. Hist. Society has an example. She may have specialized in ladies portraits as in this example of an unidentified young woman in a rather jaunty hat and dark dress with a lacy front.CONDITION; the oak grained paper seems to have been stamped twice with Smith's name but is clearly identified. A RARE image. Very Good.

HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCE ALFRED, DUKE OF SAXE-COBURG AND GOTHA
No Place Noted,, 1861. No Binding. Photographic Image, circa 1861, b & w photograph, (3 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches) (10 cm x 6.50 cm) back is blank, Prince Alfred Ernest Albert (1844-1900) was born at Windsor Castle on August 6, 1844. the second son and fourth child of Queen Victoria. On the abdication of Otto, King of Greece, in 1862, the crown was offered to Prince Alfred, but the British government did not agree to the proposal.  In 1865 he was created the Duke of Edinburgh and Earl of Ulster.  . In 1874 he married the Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, only surviving daughter of Alexander II, Emperor of Russia and was given the honorary rank of a captain in the Russian navy. Fond of music and an excellent violinist, Prince Alfred took a prominent part in establishing the Royal College of Music.  An avid stamp collector, he was the first honorary president of the Royal Philatelic Society, and his collection became the basis for the royal collection. "Affie" (so called by his mother) was a committed naval officer and  in 1893 was made Admiral of the Fleet.  He died July 30, 1900 of a heart attack. In 1861 Prince Alfred spent five weeks in the Maritime Provinces, Newfoundland and Lower Canada. Very Good.
