Edinburgh, Waugh and Innes, 1836. Leather. John Abercrombie was a Scottish physician and philosopher. In 1830 he published his philosophical speculations Inquiries concerning the Intellectual Powers of Man and the Investigation of Truth, which was followed in 1833 by a sequel, The Philosophy of th Sixth edition. The Chambers Biographical Dictionary says of him that after Dr James Gregory's death, he was 'recognised as the first consulting physician in Scotland&apos. From 1816 he published various papers in the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal, which formed the basis of his more extensive works: Pathological and Practical Researches on Diseases of the Brain and Spinal Cord, regarded as the first textbook in neuropathology, and Researches on the Diseases of the Intestinal Canal, Liver and other Viscera of the Abdomen, both published in 1828. In 1821 he was elected to the Royal College of Surgeons. For his services as a physician and philanthropist he received many marks of distinction, including the Rectorship of Marischal College. Bound by Scott and Benson, Carlisle with binder's label to front pastedown. With previous owners ink inscriptions to front free endpaper and half title, one dated 1838. In a half roan binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, sound but with some bumping and wear to extremities and some rubbing to boards. London, T. Jones, 1768-1778. Leather. A set of five very scarce volumes by Abraham Tucker, under the pen name of Edward Search, in leather binding. Very important texts and all contemporary editions are extremely rare. As these were published separately they are usually seen individually and a five volume collection is highly unusal. The original work was seven volumes broken in to parts. Not special externally and would really benefit from the attentions of a good binder but we keep them here are entirely original. Bound and marked as an eight volume set, this collection comprises Volumes III (Volume II Part I- 1768), Volume V (Volume II part III-1768) Volume VI (Volume III Part I- 1778), Volume VI (IV Part II- 1777) and Volume VIII (Volume V Part III- 1777) The volumes are major works of eighteenth century philosophy and theology, anticipating utilitarianism and holding that "every man's satisfaction" is the ultimate end of any action. Contains the bookplate of one George Phillips to the pastedown of volume III. In calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally, there is wear to the boards, joints, extremities and backstrips, with tenderness to hinges. The front board is detached but present to the sixth volume and missing to the eighth. Internally, the pages are firmly bound but are somewhat spotted and age-toned, with some creasing. Overall: FAIR due to binding though internally presentable. Fair . Ill.: None. Fair .

Bologna, Pellegrino Bonardo, 1580. Vellum. The second edition of Flaminio De Nobili's very scarce treatise on Human Love. In a contemporary vellum binding. A very scarce work, with all sixteenth century editions of this work seldom found. This is one of two editions in the sixteenth century, with the first being published in 1567 followed by this second edition in 1580. After this there was a French translation which appeared at 1588. Printed by Pellegrino Bonardo for Emilio Giannotti of Bologna. Pagination is to the recto of every leaf, and therefore pagination to the first part is actually 106. D3 is mispaginated 10 when it should be 15. With the signatures: ?2 A-N4 O2 2B-H4 2I2 Collated, complete. To the final blank there is a prior owner's inscription, 'Ottima Edizione Citata Nella Biblioteca.. tom II: 96: 1857.' Written by Flaminio De Nobili, and Italian scholar of ancient Greek. Nobili wrote several treatises including his 'Happiness of Man&apos. This philosophical treatise on human love was based on the sonnets of Petraca and on Finico's Neoplatonist theses. This work received a great reception from the likes of Annibal Caro, Carlo Gualteruzzi, Benedetto Varchi and Torquato Tasso. Flaminio de'Nobili quickly became known nationally for his philosophical treatises and his classical scholarship. He was a part of the literary jury of counter-reformation inspiration who examined Torquato Tasso's liberated Jerusalem&apos. Hamba 1536; Gay-Lemonnyer III 1238, mentions only the translation; not in Adams. A very scarce work by an important classical scholar and philosopher. In a contemporary vellum binding. Externally, sound with loss to the spine. from worming and rubbing. Worming to the gutter at the front and rear of the work, only affecting the endpapers. Rear hinge is slightly strained but firm at the bottom. Prior owner's inscription to the rear endpaper, in a neat hand. 'Ottima Edizione Citata Nella Biblioteca.. tom II: 96: 1857.'
