Journey of the Soul: The Story of Hai bin Yaqzan
The Octagon Press, London, 1982. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Black Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. 9780900860904 Foreword & introduction to front. Journey of the Soul: The Story of Hai bin Yaqzan is a philosophical romance about a young man who is raised by a doe on a deserted island, he explores the laws of nature, devises a rational theology and entertains theories about the origin of the universe. He develops a sense of ethics: Out of mercy for animals, he turns vegetarian, and out of care for plants, he preserves their seeds. and eventually finds his way in the natural world. Written in12th-century Moorish Spain the book is often regarded as the prototype for Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. The author, bin Tufail, was one of the outstanding philosophers and scientists of his day, and hence many strands are woven into the fabric of the tale. Hai’'s physical development is paralleled by his psychological and spiritual development; astonishingly modern ideas on physiology, on the process of evolution, on the "scientific method," all find their place in knowledge which his observation and intuition combine to produce. Above all, the book is an allegory of the path towards enlightenment. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. x + 62. in library film protection. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. Dramatic Universe (Volume 2): The Foundations of Moral Philosophy
Bennett Books, London, 1997. First Thus, Paperback. Near Fine Condition. 9781881408048 Titles; author's note; preface & extensive contents list to front. Facsimile of 1961 edition. The Dramatic Universe builds an account of the significance and purpose of man’s existence on the earth, revealing a great task that necessitates a two-way communication with Higher Intelligences. The four volume work is a complete journey through J .G. Bennett’s search to give expression to the systematisation of the whole Universal drama. Spanning fifty chapters from 'Points of Departure' to 'The Next Age of Mind', the Dramatic Universe provides a total unified picture of Man, the World, and God by synthesising the three domains of fact, value and harmony. This is achieved through a framework of determining conditions postulating Being time as Eternity, and Will time as Hyparxis. Complete self-development is needed in order to fulfil our destined role in the spiritualisation of existence and this, in turn, requires fulfilment of our potential in being and our development of will. Man's 'eternity blindness' is the cause of our inability to perceive potential and to experience how to participate fully in the Great Work. Volume Two (this book) examines the properties of multi-termed systems, using FactValue as Dyad, Being as Tetrad and Spirit as Pentad. Spirit is postulated as the fulfillment of potentialities, thus becoming, of necessity, hazardous. John G Bennett was a writer, mathematician, scientist, linguist, explorer, mystic, philosopher, visionary and teacher. For over forty years he wrote and revised the work which was finally published as The Dramatic Universe. Among the remarkable people influencing Bennett's life over this span of time were Peter and Sophia Ouspensky, George Gurdjieff, Muhammed Subuh, the Shiva Puri Baba, Reverend Father Dalle, Idries Shah and Hasan Shushud. Making his own synthesis, Bennett was enabled in the last four years of his life to share his extraordinary wealth of teaching with the many students attracted to his International Academy for Continuous Education. Talking on subjects relating to the structure and pattern of The Dramatic Universe, he gradually led his students to a profound - indeed previously unexplored revelation of the future. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xxviii + 356. 2 volumes of the 4-volume set. No Dust Jacket as published. White titles spine. illustrated by b/w. diagrams. Bennett, J. G.
The Dramatic Universe: Volume 1 - Foundations of Natural Philosophy
Claymont Communications, Charles Town, West Virginia, USA, 1987. First Thus, Softcover. Very Good Condition. 9780934254144 This is the first new edition in more than 30 years of Bennett's ground-breaking exploration. Even 60 years after its original publication, “The Dramatic Universe” represents what is to date the most audacious attempt to meet the demands of both Science and Religion, through the reconciling action of the domain of Realization. This first volume is also the fullest account anywhere of Gurdjieff’s doctrine of Reciprocal Maintenance, and to date, the only explanation of planetary, solar, galactic and universal intelligence. In his Preface Bennett writes: “The postulate of the homogeneity of fact and value will prove to be an instrument of unlimited power and when applied to the elucidation of the Doctrine of Reciprocal Maintenance it can give us a working answer to all the fundamental questions of our existence.” This book is the road map to the New Epoch. "The Foundations of Natural Philosophy" is constructed on a scheme of 9 parts: 1. Metaphysics; 2. Epistemology; 3. Methodology; 4. Systematics; 5. The Dynamical World; 6. The World of Energy; 7. The World of Things; 8. Life; 9. The Cosmic Order. Bennett introduces the technique that became known as Systematics to guide the reader, and harnesses the tools of theoretical physics to explain the worlds that are beyond human perception, but nevertheless underlie our existence. Revised Edition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. ix + 182. No Dust Jacket as published. Gift inscription in ink inside front cover. White titles spine. Includes index & glossary of terms. Gurdjieff Today (Transformation of Man series - No. 1)
Coombe Springs Press, Sherborne, Gloucestershire, 1974. First Edition, Paperback. Near Fine Condition/Good. 9780900306136 The present Monograph is the first of a series of six - 'The Transformation of Man'. The text is based on a lecture given at Caxton Hall, London in December 1973. It is intended for those already acquainted with Gurdjieff's ideas or other Sufi teachings. The same will apply to later Monographs. When Gurdjieff first came to France bringing his system of psychological techniques, the significance of his ideas and methods were not widely acknowledged. Now, some fifty years later, as we find ourselves in an increasingly chaotic and expanding world, the relevance of his system is being seen by 'more and more people, who seek a. meaning for their existence. It is in this that Gurdjieff's system is distinctive for he emphasises that we have to "look differently at this world" and gives us the methods and techniques to do so. Transformation
Coombe Springs Press, Sherborne, Gloucestershire, 1978. First Edition, Paperback. Poor Condition. 9780900306518 'Transformation' was written as a recreational project while Bennett was on holiday with his family in August 1968. The text is unfinished, was left abandoned at the time of the author's death six years after it was written, and contains references to later chapters which remained unwritten. There is no reason to suppose that he ever intended it to be published, and indeed when once asked during the early days of his International Academy of Continuous Education whether he planned to lay out a written account of his teachings and techniques, he rejected the suggestion. The text contains none of the copious references to other authors and texts which form a part of his other writings. It is not even clear to whom he was writing. However, the text has been found to be of great value to those who try to follow a spiritual path based on the principles of the Fourth Way. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. viii + 198. Brunton, Paul
The Secret Path: A Technique of Spiritual Self-Discovery for the Modern World (Grey Arrow books; No.26)
Arrow Books, London, 1959. First Thus, Softcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 'The treasure-trove of the real self is within us, but it can be lifted only when the mind is still.'Paul Brunton was one of the 20th century's greatest explorers of, and writers on, the spiritual traditions of the East. He travelled widely throughout India (in particular) and met gurus and teachers who enriched his life immeasurably. By passing on to us the wisdom he learned directly from these holy men, he is widely credited as having introduced yoga and meditation to the West. In The Secret Path, Paul Brunton explains in simple language how to meditate, and how this will transform your everyday existence. He also describes the remarkable experiences and understandings he himself gained from meditation and how, by making this ancient practice a part of your life, you will be able to experience a valuable kind of freedom and a deep inner peace. The classic work - which has been reprinted many times - is a very special pointer towards your inner world, and one written by a most unusual and adventurous man of insight. The Theory of Conscious Harmony: from the Letters of Rodney Collin.
Robinson & Watkins Books Ltd, London, 1958. First Thus, Paperback. Very Good Condition. 9780722401521 Titles, contents & biographical note to front; Before Paulo Coelho and Echart Tolle, came Rodney Collin. Rodney Collin was closely associated with P. D. Ouspensky. In 1948 he moved to Mexico to carry on the study and practice of the ideas received from Ouspensky and Ouspensky's teacher, Gurdjieff. During the next few years he corresponded with a large number of people, from many walks of life, all over the world, who sought to understand the Fourth Way - a path of spiritual discipline to be pursued in everyday life. After his death in 1956 his letters were collected and edited by those who had been working with him, and were issued in the form of this book. "There is so much to do in preparation for the future, so many different fields in which harmony must come, and all by means of ordinary everyday men like ourselves...In individual men, harmony among fuctions; harmony between body, soul and spirit; harmony among its different members, harmony between its leader and its origin; in the great esoteric impulse launched through Gurdjieff and Ouspensky, harmony among all lines and groups; harmony between them, their founders and God; in the world, harmony among all branches of knowledge, all peoples, all esoteric lines," Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xii + 212. Oracle of Change : How to Consult the I Ching
Penguin, Harmondsworth, Middlesex, 1972. First Paperback Edition, Softcover. Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. 9780140033977 The origin of the I Ching is lost among the myths of prehistoric China. It has existed in some form for more than 4,000 years, and in its philosophy reflects both the major Chinese religions, Taoism and Confucianism. But it is not only a source of philosophical wisdom - it is a practical oracle, which, when consulted, can give advice on how to act so that. the future can be faced and experienced in the best possible manner; further, when consulted by someone in sympathy with it, it can throw light on the working of the unconscious and the inner self. The book is divided into two parts. The first part gives a brief history of the changes and additions to the original Oracle of Change. The second part gives the basic text of the I Ching as it appeared in the 1715 edition, newly translated from the original Ancient Chinese. This text consists of sixty-four separate interpretations, each showing both a practical and a philosophical point of view. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 237 pages. No Dust Jacket as published. Emerson, Ralph Waldo
The Complete Prose Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson: with a critical introduction
Ward Lock, London, circa 1893. Edition Unstated, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. A volume in the Minerva Library of Famous Books with an introduction by G. T. Bettany. Tissue-guarded b/w. frontis. portrait of Emerson. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-82) was the most prominent American essayist, abolitionist,, poet and philosopher of the 19th century. In 1833, Emerson set himself up in Concord, Massachusetts, and began his career as a lecturer and essayist. In his first book, Nature, in 1836, he introduced some of his key ideas such as idealism and unity. 'Nature' attracted a number of followers, such as Bronson Alcott, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, Theodore Parker, Orestes Brownson, Margaret Fuller, and Henry David Thoreau, all of whom started meeting at Emerson's house regularly. Eventually, this group of like-minded writers and intellectuals would become known as Transcendentalists and create their own magazine, The Dial (1840-1844), as an outlet for their ideas. Many of Emerson's ideas, such as the metaphysical unity of God, nature, and humanity, his disregard for books, and the power and responsibility of the individual, were all at some level inspired by his engagement with Hindu texts, and he made occasional references to gods and stories from these texts in his essays.
