This volume of The English Illustrated Magazine includes the first appearance of 'Walks in the Wheatfields' by Richard Jefferies (1848-1887, English nature writer); printed in two parts: Pt I (Vol IV, pt 46: 663-672 (July 1887)) & Pt II (pt 47: 707-716 (August 1887)), illustrated by P. Macnab & Dewey Bates (later collected in full, but not illustrated, by Mrs Jefferies in Field and Hedgerow (1889)).Miller & Matthews A7.2.

T. Nelson and Sons 1858 96, (2), 5 col plates + col vignette to title-page. 180x130mm. HB. 8vo, orig. blind stamped blue cloth, also with gilt title and design to front board and spine, aeg; some wear to corners and head/foot of spine; some spotting / marginal staining to endpapers, scattered foxing. A little shaken. Early owner's name to endpaper, dated 1868. Vg.. 1st edition. An early example of colour printing from T. Nelson using transfer chromolithography. The colour printed illustrations are pasted into decorative gilt printed borders, all pages with gilt ruled borders. 'The Seasons of the Year' pp. 1-22, 'Poetry of the Seasons' pp. 23-96..
