Lacrymae ('tears' i.c. poems) on the death of Mary Stuart II, wife of King William the Third, on 28th Dec. 1694, written by Thomas Browne and over hundred other Cambridge college members and alumni, most tears in Latin and English; but also several ones in Greek, French and Hebrew, the last by Tho. Bennett, and by Joshua Man of Christ College. Poetry - English. Bookplate of Thomas Brooke on first pastedown. Internally very good condition, binding with defects, but still attractive. Written in the early 1630's, Descartes withheld publication as a result of the condemnation of Galileo in 1633. The work was translated from a copy of his French manuscript, to which was the excellent introduction by Schuyl was added. Second Latin edition. Some minor red staining towards upper-edge. A good copy. Contemp. mottled calf, marbled endpapers, red edges, slight wear to joints and corners, stain on frontcover. Latin. Printed in France. This introduction, dealing mainly with the text and ancient versions of the Hebrew Bible, was obviously written in view of the author's edition of the Hebrew Bible, which appeared in 1753. Contains occasional Hebrew type, using the same large characters which appear in Houbigant's famous edition of the Hebrew Bible.

Netherlands. First work: An introduction to the Talmud by Jeshua ben Joseph, ha-Levi, first published in 1490. In the introduction L'Empereur mentions that he visited Jews in Amsterdam in their homes and in the synagogue and that his (unknown) Jewish teacher in rabbinica got into difficulties with the Parnassim, because L'Empereur made no secret of the fact that he studied rabbinica with the intention of using his knowledge against Judaism. (Rooden, Constantijn L'Empereur, 1989, p. 163). A copy of this work was in Spinoza's library (Te Winkel 43). Willems 398. Fuks, HTN 1, 50. Amsterdam, Joh. et Corn. Blaeu, 1642. 4to. Fine copy. Contemp. laced overlapping vellum, blue spickled edges, spine slightly dam. on top. Vellum slightly soiled.. Convolute of 2 works. First edition, second impression. The first impression is dated 1641 and lacks the introduction and the poem by Barlaeus. Dionysius prepared his edition and translation of Maimonides' {Hilkhot Avodah Zarah} in cooperation with Menasseh ben Israel and in fact died shortly after he had finished the work in Amsterdam (1633). His father was much impressed by the book and decided to publish it together with his own study on the origin and progression of idolatry which took a couple of years. On page 11/12 a poem by Caspar Barlaeus dedicated to Gerard in commemoration of the death of Dionysius on October 25th, 1633. Fuks, Hebrew typography Vol. I, nr. 202.

Some foxing.Contemp. interlaced vellum gilt decorated with coat of arms of Amsterdam on both sides. Some soiling and wear, mainly to backcover; ties lacking. Met prijs aangeboden aan Simon Vissering in 1833. In de 19de eeuw was Simon Vissering (1818 - 1888) door zijn vele journalistieke, maatschappelijke, wetenschappelijke en litteraire activiteiten in Nederland alom bekend. Als liberaal politicus was hij minister van Financiën (1880 - 1881). En daarvoor volgde hij in 1850 Thorbecke op als hoogleraar Staathuishoudkunde aan de universiteit van Leiden. Vissering was overigens de bedenker van de naam IJmuiden. In de Gids, jaargang 12, 1848, 667 - 683 verscheen een verhaal over een denkbeeldige reis over het Noordzeekanaal, voordat het daadwerkelijk in 1876 werd aangelegd.
