Book, 4 volumes,bound in full calf, gilt spines, Edition statement from half-titles of volumes 1-2; no edition statement in volumes 3-4, but a leaf of "Advertisement to the second edition" (with binder's instructions) inserted after the preface in volume 1 described the second edition as encompassing the two additional volumes. Engraved illustration on title pages (the same one in each volume), signed "Isaac Taylor del. et sculp." Publisher's advertisements at end of volumes 1 and 4. All vols have had lacquer applied , some covers detached, prelims detached in vol. 1, bindings are darkened, text blocks are clean, collation complete all vols. needs rebinding, All vols have the engraved bookplate of Thomas Stewart Traill. Thomas Stewart Traill 1781- 1862) was a Scottish physician, chemist, meteorologist, zoologist and scholar of medical jurisprudence. He was the grandfather of the physicist, meteorologist and geologist Robert Traill Omond. Also present in all vols is the ink signature of Edward G. Cox; Edward "Eddie" Godfrey Cox (1876 - 1963) an American linguist and yachtsman. Born in Ottawa, Ohio. He was an emeritus professor at the Universities of Cornell and Washington. He was the editor of the journal Modern Language Quarterly from 1943 to 1963. Poor.
