12 2024, 296 pp. Dutch text, ca. 400 colour ills., hardcover. Nicolaes Gillis (Antwerpen 1593 - Haarlem 1630) behoort tot de eerste beoefenaars van het zelfstandige stilleven. Over zijn leven was tot nog toe niet veel bekend, behalve dat hij uit Antwerpen kwam en in Haarlem werkzaam was. Nieuw onderzoek wijst op een gedegen leertijd in Antwerpen, waarna Gillis furore maakte als pionier van het Haarlemse voedsel- en bloemstilleven. In Antwerpen heeft Gillis veel geleerd van Osias Beert; in Haarlem was de kruisbestuiving met Floris van Dijck van belang. De gezamenlijke invloed van Gillis en Van Dijck zou zich uitstrekken naar volgende generaties stillevenschilders. Het oeuvre dat Nicolaes Gillis heeft nagelaten is niet erg groot. Dit boek laat echter zien dat het veelzijdiger en invloedrijker is geweest dan voorheen werd aangenomen. Gillis was niet alleen een schakel tussen Antwerpen en Haarlem, maar ook een echte vernieuwer. Deze eerste monografie met catalogue raisonné is het resultaat van uitgebreid kunsthistorisch onderzoek en speurwerk in archieven. Behalve een overvloedige bron van informatie, vormt het boek een terecht eerbetoon aan Nicolaes Gillis.

Zo reist ook Gijs Dragt, op de Noordwest-Veluwe, in de voetsporen van drie beeldend kunstenaars. Concrete aanleiding voor zijn foto's zijn de schilderijen die Jos Lussenburg, Ben Viegers en Jan van Vuuren maakten in de vorige eeuw. Gijs Dragt gaat op zoek naar de locaties van de schilderijen, indien mogelijk naar hetzelfde standpunt. Soms lijkt het landschap of de stad onveranderd, een andere keer blijkt het oude landschap totaal verdwenen en is er een nieuw voor in de plaats gekomen. Dragt combineert verschillende beelden tot een nieuw beeld, versterkt de kleur en werkt met transparante lagen. Probeert karakteristieke kenmerken van de schilderkunst en de fotografie te verbinden. Zoals de schilder zijn penseel hanteert, zo gebruikt Gijs zijn camera. In deze publicatie komen heden en verleden samen, met de tijd als verbindende factor.

Bezield Landschap. Leven en werk van Johannes Warnardus Bilders.
October 2016, (23,5 x 29 cm), 168 pp. Dutch text, full colour ills., hardcover, Landschapschilder Johannes Warnardus Bilders (1811-1890) was bezeten van woeste natuur. Zijn schilderijen geven een mooi beeld van het landschap rond Oosterbeek, Vorden, Gieten en Vlagtwedde in de negentiende-eeuw. De manier waarop hij schilderde zegt veel over hoe hij de natuur ervoer - Bilders maakte bezielde landschappen. Bilders woonde in Utrecht en Amsterdam en was een geziene figuur in het Amsterdamse kunstenaarsmilieu. Zijn bekendheid reikte tot over de grens. Hij volgde nooit een formele schildersopleiding en stimuleerde jonge schilders hun eigen stijl te ontwikkelen, net zoals hij zelf had gedaan. De groep van jonge kunstenaars die hij rond 1855 inspireerde maakte naam als de Haagse School: Anton Mauve, Paul Gabriël, Jan de Haas en Bilders' oudste zoon Gerard Bilders. Bezield landschap is de eerste monografie over het oeuvre en de levensloop van Johannes Warnardus Bilders.

When Mark Rothko started his career in New York in the early 1920s, America had no established art. Before his tragic suicide, he completed a mural series for the Rothko Chapel commissioned by the de Menil family, accomplishing for American painting what the Monet water lilies did for French painting in the 1920s. David Anfam connects Rothko to major figures in art history with a historical, philosophical, literary, mythical, and psychological framework for the artist's development as a painter. Within the catalog itself the reproductions are grouped chronologically, with a complete concordance. Inscription, collection, provenance, and exhibition and publication information for each painting are also provided, and the book closes with the most extensive bibliography compiled on Rothko to date. The catalog will continue with works on paper in additional volumes.

Sheila Hicks. Reencounter / Reencuentro.

Reencounter is the publication of the exhibition presented at the Museo de Arte Precolombino, held from August 2019 to January 2020 (Santiago-Chile), in which the artist presented her textile work in dialogue with the Museum's collection pre-Columbian fabrics. The book explores the renowned photographer and textile artist's work, that dialogues with contemporary art and the legacy of American indigenous art, showing the pre-Columbian influence in her works, most of which were inspired in Andean fabrics and the south of Chile. As a student of Josef Albers and with an artistic formation based on Bauhaus philosophy, in 1975 Sheila Hicks set out on a trip through South America, from Venezuela to Tierra del Fuego, a fundamental experience in her formation. It was in that journey through the Andes where she learned about textile techniques and ancestral cosmovisions that would change her life and where, inspired by the landscape and architecture of the south of America, she began her own textile artwork.
