Complete 52 issues for 1907 with index. c. 16 pp per issue. 858 pp. paginated consecutively. Illustrated throughout in b/w. Heavy - weighs 2.5 Kg. Condition is fair to good. Binding marked, showing signs of age and wear. Internally most is in good condition and all pages clean. Some preliminary pages are loose with no loss, joint cracked towards back with corresponding detaching of leaves. However no loss. Three small cuttings have been taken from respective pages. N. Oblonsky's name neatly stamped in Roman letters to f.e.ps. and a number of early pages. Niva [????] popular magazine published between 1870 and 1918 founded by noted publisher A. F. Marx. The periodical defined itself as "an illustrated weekly journal of literature, politics and modern life." Along with more genre type illustrations and literature, these 1907 issues include work by Aleksandr Blok, Nadezhda Teffi, Kornei Chukhovsky, Polyxena Solovyova (Allegro), Valery Bryusov Bilibin and Michail Nesterov amongst others. Many articles cover new science, one is on the great Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev. Lighthouses, hot-air balloons, psephographs all feature. In one issue is an uncommon photograph of the Imperial family. There is a feature on Lev Tolstoi and many photographs of the members of the State Duma [??????????????? ????. Gosudarstvennaya Duma].

Dust-wrapper with usual rubbing and very mild chipping to edges. Flegon/Blond publication of this semi-fictional essay (also known as Round and About) was a landmark in Abramov's career, as it caused him to be virtually barred from publication for five years. It describes the life of workers in a poorly administered collective farm". Cornwall, 74. This appears to be the only example of collaboration between notorious publisher Alec Flegon and Anthony Blond ""the last of the eponymous Jewish publishers whose chutzpah made publishing hum in the days before the conglomerates" (Michael Barber).

Paper browning a little. Endre Ady (Érmindszent 1877 - Budapest 1919) one of the most important poets not only in the 20th century but in Hungarian literature in general. These scarce translations were published in Paris a few years after the poet's death.

Berlin, Izd-vo I.P. Ladyzhnikova, 1923. A very good copy in original decorated covers. A very good copy. Used; Very Good Nikolay Yakovlevich Agnivtsev (1888-1932) was a poet, dramatist and notably a children's author. He attended Petersburg University (but did not graduate). Agnivtsev contributed to "Satirikon" and various other journals. In 1917, he took part in "Bi-Ba-Bo" cabaret and wrote much of its repertoire. In 1921, in Berlin, he published his "St. Petersburg" verse collection. This present work is a new edition entitled "Blistatelnyi Sankt'-Peterburg'." [Brilliant St. Petersburg]. Paperback.

Used; Very Good "While in terms of its plot and structure this book may bear a resemblance to something like The Good Soldier Schweik or Tristam Shandy, linguistically it is absolutely Rabelaisian. It is a monologue, nasty, morbid, frightful, rampant with a cadence resembling biblical verse. To drop yet another name, this book sounds like Jeremiah: laughing " Joseph Brodsky, 1987. Hardback.

London, Knopf, 1929. True first edition in English published in London, May 1929. Original orange-coloured cloth, spine decorated black, boards plain (not decorated as US edition). Dust-wrapper partially present. Borzoi logo to lower board. 256[1] pp. Book in very good condition. Very tight and clean. Small isolated damp spots to fore-edges, unobtrusive minor fading to cloth edge. Much remaining of scarce fragile dust-wrapper but in four pieces lacking spine area. See image. Isaac Emmanuilovich Babel ????? ???????????? ?????? 1894-1940. The translation of the New York edition (August 1929) attributed to Nadia Helstein, has different pagination, and different text to dust-wrapper. "Stranger still is the unexplained fact that Helstein's 1929 translation is apparently identical to a translation attributed to a translator named John Harland, published in London the same year by the same publisher" (Vinokur, 2016). Title page verso : "The stories in this book first appeared separately in various Soviet papers and magazines. They were published in book form with the title Konarmia in 1923 by the Moscow publishers ?Raduga' and then by the State publishers in 1926. This translation has been made from the third, revised,(1928) edition of the latter publishers." .
