The first edition of this very scarce work.An 1857 act, regarding the preservation and increase of salmon in the River Tweed, and the fisheries in the River, passed on the 17th August 1857, being 20 & 21 Victoria, cap.cxlviii. The River Tweed is known as one of the greatest salmon rivers of Britain. This act was later repealed by the Scotland Act 1998. In the original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing and a few minor marks to the boards and spine. Fading to the spine and extremities. A small amount of buming to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Front hinge is strained. Pencil to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. There is some wear to the extremities, particularly to the spine which is chipped to the top and tail with some loss of leather. The front and rear inner hinges are strained but holding. The binding is tight and firm and both covers are attached. The front and rear outer hinges are cracked. It is a fascinating insight into the struggles and issues facing the residents of Leeds in the early nineteenth century, and shows us how they went about trying to solve their problems. Front hinge is starting but firm, which has resulted in the head of the front joint to lift, but it remains secure. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Minor offsetting and the odd spot to the pastedowns and to the endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd scattered spot. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the title page, 'J. Summersgill Burnsley' and 'Charles Lolley, Leeds-', the inscription has offset to the reverse and also to the facing page.
