In de eerste helft van de 18e eeuw ontstond in Oisterwijk (Noord-Brabant) een joodse gemeente van marskramers, slachters en handelaren in gebruikte kleding. De gemeente breidde zich uit en in 1757 werd opperrabbijn Jekoetiel Zuskind aangesteld voor de Meijerij van Den Bosch en omstreken met als standplaats Oisterwijk. Als eerste rabbijn in Brabant schreef hij een Pinkas (notulenboek)en Memorboek en schiep daarmee een (geloofs)band tussen de van heinde en ver komende Joden. Deze manuscripten (pinkassiem) bevinden zich in de Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana te Amsterdam. De handgeschreven boekwerkjes in het Hebreeuws, Jiddisch, Aramees en Nederlands zijn in deze uitgave vertaald door Jenneken Schouten MA (Hebrew and Jewish Studies te Amsterdam en Translation Studies te Leiden). Zij heeft veel ervaring met Jiddische handschriften en Hebreeuwse teksten en heeft niet alleen alles naar het Nederlands vertaald maar ook de betekenis toegelicht. De pinkassiem zijn van grote betekenis voor de geschiedenis van de joden in Brabant in de 18e eeuw. De vertaling van deze pinkassiem zal een aanwinst zijn voor de kennis over en het inzicht in de geschiedenis van de Joodse gemeenschap in Oisterwijk.
